iTax basics: log in, navigate, fix common errors

iTax is KRA's online portal — every return, payment, and certificate flows through it. Master the navigation and you've solved 80% of compliance friction.
Logging in
- Go to itax.kra.go.ke.
- Enter your PIN (A-series for individuals, P-series for companies).
- Answer the security question (set when the PIN was first created).
- Enter password.
Common login errors
- 'Invalid security stamp' — clear browser cache and try a different browser
- 'Account locked' — wait 30 minutes or visit a Huduma Centre to reset
- Forgot password — click 'Forgot Password', answer security question, new password emailed
- Forgot security question — only resolvable at a KRA station with your ID
Key menus
- Registration → amend obligations, add directors
- Returns → file VAT, PAYE, TOT, Income Tax
- Payments → generate Payment Registration Number (PRN) to pay via M-Pesa/bank
- Useful Links → Certificate of Tax Compliance (TCC)
