Run a name search on eCitizen

~5 min

Before anything else, reserve a unique business name through the Business Registration Service (BRS) on eCitizen. Reservation costs KES 950 and is valid for 30 days.

  1. Log in at ecitizen.go.ke (use your Kenyan ID and KRA PIN to create an account if you don't have one).
  2. Open Business Registration Service → 'Make Application' → 'Business Name Search & Reservation'.
  3. Submit 1–3 proposed names in order of preference.
  4. Pay KES 950 via M-Pesa, card, or bank.
  5. Approval typically lands in your eCitizen inbox within a few hours to 24 hours.

Naming rules that get applications rejected

  • Avoid restricted words: Bank, Insurance, Sacco, University, Government, Presidential — unless you have the relevant licence.
  • Avoid names too similar to existing registered businesses or trademarks.
  • No offensive, misleading, or discriminatory wording.
  • Must end with a clean descriptor like 'Enterprises', 'Traders', 'Ventures' or simply your trade.

Run a quick Google + KIPI trademark search on your favourite name before paying. It saves you from picking a name that's legally available but will get sued later.
